As it says in Corinthian 10:31 we ought to glorify God in whatever we do. Paul says whether we eat or drink or whatever we do we should do all for the glory of God. Again in Colossians 3:17 he says: “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” One translation for 1 Corinthians 6:20 says “Glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
Not that I read these scriptures for the first time, it was when Covid hit in early 2019 that these verses captivated my mind. I was so obsessed with the question “What does it mean to Glorify God?” that my only prayer at the time was to get a clear revelation of this scripture. If it says to glorify God while eating, drinking and whatever activity we do, we must be mindful of this in everything that we do. But how? I had deep desire to understand how to make this verse a reality in my every activity.
It did not take very long for God to answer my questions. In fact, it was the very next day that He made it clear what it means to glorify Him. Let me share with you what God laid on my heart that day.
- Reflecting the character of God:
1 Peter 2:9 says:
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”
Just as the moon reflects the glory of the sun, we are to reflect the glory of God. Our lives should be such that it proclaims the excellencies of God who saved us from the darkness and brought us into the light of his presence.
2. Being like Christ in this dark world:
Romans 8: 29 says:
“For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. “
There are many other scriptures that implore us to keep in step with the Holy Spirit who yearns for Christ’s likeness to be formed in us. As we remain sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit, our character will become more and more like Christ bringing glory to God.
3. Doing what pleases Him:
There is something unique about those who glorify God. They do not wait to be told what to do. They find out what pleases the Lord and act upon it. They know the desires of their God and live accordingly. This my friends brings so much joy to our Father as He sees Christ’s likeness in us because Christ knew what God wanted and lived for His glory.
Ephesians 5: 17 says:
“Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”
My hope is that in future posts to come, we will learn together what glorifying God means and how we can shine like starts in the dark world around us.
Excellent message and reminders, Jennifer. I look forward to hearing where the Lord leads you and how I can learn from your journey also
